Popular Places to visit in the Netherlands
Let's say you visit the Netherlands soon. Which places are worth a visit? Here are seven hotspots to discover the Netherlands while you stay in the country.
The Amsterdam canals
Amsterdam is known for its canals among other things! The 17th-century canals were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The canals are mainly located on quiet streets and alleys, making it an excellent attraction to explore the neighborhood in and around the city.
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
Vincent Van Gogh probably won't need much of an introduction. He was one of the world's most famous painters known for his impressionist paintings of landscapes and for his many self-portraits. Most of his work is collected in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam at Museumplein. The collection includes more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 letters, most of them addressed to his brother Theo. You will also find work by some of his contemporaries.
Anne Frank Museum, Amsterdam
Anne Frank is known worldwide for her diary, named Het Achterhuis, which she wrote during the Second World War. Her diary was published under the impulse of her father Otto Frank. It is also one of the most widely read books in the world as it has been translated into 51 languages. Since 2009, 'The Secret Annex' has been on the Unesco World Heritage List for documents. The Anne Frank Museum provides a realistic storytelling of how the Secret Annex looked like and how the Frank family lived there. It was restored and kept as much as possible in its original condition.
Keukenhof, South Holland
The Keukenhof is a 34-hectare flower park where more than a million visitors come every year to admire the floral splendor. It is the largest public garden in the world. Tulips from companies in the area are displayed in the spring, traditionally from mid-March to mid-May. Here you can visit the popular tulip fields!
The beach of Scheveningen, South Holland
Just behind the city The Hague, on Scheveningen beach, you will find everything to enjoy the sun, the salty water, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Stroll along the wide, long boulevard and enjoy the stylish beach pavilions. Those who like to see it from higher up can hang on the ZIP-line or in the Ferris wheel.
Cube houses, Rotterdam
Rotterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands in terms of area and it has a number of very special monumental buildings. As an architecture lover you can certainly indulge yourself here. There is the Euromast Rotterdam, and the iconic Cube Houses designed by Piet Blom, located at the Martkhal. These houses are literally cubes. As if that wasn't noticeable enough, they are also bright yellow!
The Delta Works, Zeeland
The Delta Works are an ingenious defense system to protect the provinces of Zeeland, South Holland and North Brabant against high water from the sea. This is caused by the flood disaster of 1953, when Zeeland was hit by extremely high water. The Delta Plan was drawn up, which consists of a system of dams, dikes, locks and storm surge barriers. Impressing to see this in real life!
